Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:  
 
Works under general supervision to operate and maintain steam and electrical driven centrifugal chillers and high pressure steam boilers; this to include operation of all associated plant equipment for steam and chilled water production.
 
 
FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
 
Essential Functions
 
•        Must be willing and able to work rotating shifts that include holidays and weekends.
•        Follows standard and established practices, refers to operation and service manuals to evaluate and maintain proper operation of all machinery.
•        Operates equipment to meet the requirements of district heating and cooling process by insuring an uninterrupted steam and chilled water supply to the district heating customers.
•        Provides continuous operation of gas engines and pump sets.
•        Monitors and records pressures, temperatures, fuel consumption, etc. on the operating equipment.
•        Identifies and informs appropriate individual of symptoms requiring maintenance action.
•        Maintains fuel, hydraulic, coolant, water levels of engines, boilers, expansion tanks, compressors, pumps and related equipment.  Services filters, strainers, etc. as needed.
•        Monitors machinery for noise, vibration, etc., to insure the safe operating condition of machinery and takes immediate corrective action should an unsafe condition exist.
•        Applies knowledge of hand and power tools and general repair knowledge to assist in the maintenance and repair of engines, boilers, compressors, pumps and all associated equipment.
•        Cleans and maintains engines, chillers and other equipment and performs general cleaning in the chiller/boiler room area.
•        Performs work in a safe manner.
•        Must be present and ready to begin working at the designated time.
•        Must be available to work occasional unscheduled overtime, as required.
 
Physical Activities: Standing, walking, sitting, climbing, stooping and crouching, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, talking, lifting and hearing
 
Physical Demands: Employee may be required to occasionally lift objects weighing up to 75 pounds.
 
Visual Acuity: Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less with the ability to bring objects into sharp focus.  Ability to distinguish colors one from another.
 
Working Conditions:  Worker will be exposed to temperatures in excess of 90 degrees Fahrenheit; equipment noise greater than 85 dB; and hazards such as high-pressure steam lines.

Job Requirements

POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
 
Knowledge:  Requires knowledge of high pressure boilers, centrifugal chillers, steam turbines, pumps and reciprocating engines. 
 
Experience:  Must have a minimum of three years experience, ideally in process related field such as chemical industry, refinery, heating, generation or any that would require a demonstrated aptitude for applying skills to an involved or complicated regimentation.
 
Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids: Computer; telephone; hand and power tools.
 
License(s)/Certification(s) Required: First Class Operator License. Must possess or be able to obtain within six months (6) of hire date.
