Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE

Highly knowledgeable, high impact Director of Benefits to lead the Veolia benefits department in alignment with business and HR objectives. The Director of Benefits will assess trends and best practices to proactively implement solutions that drive business success. The position is responsible for the design, development, implementation, and management of Benefits and Benefits systems as well as Compliance framework for Veolia North America and will report to the VP Total Rewards and will have direct management and oversight of the benefits team (4 to 6 direct reports).

PRIMARY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Strategic planning, design and implementation of the Veolia North America benefits programs, including, but not limited to, pension, 401(k),medical, dental, vision, life insurance, FMLA, worker’s compensation and disability.
  • Lead the benefits team including ensuring the ongoing coaching and development of each employee while providing a culture of trust and empowerment.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with third-party benefit providers/brokers/vendors.
  • Monitor providers/brokers/vendor contracts and renewals and routinely assess cost effective, competitive, benefits position relative to the market.
  • Ensure compliance of company’s benefits practices in accordance with all federal, state and local governing bodies.
  • Reporting of HRIS data for analysis and presentation to SLT.
  • Ensure appropriate controls exist within the department’s processes and procedures so the department is compliant with all internal audit and other required regulations. Make recommendations to streamline processes, improve procedures, or enhance controls to ensure the department is operating as efficiently as possible.
  • Ensure that all plan documents are current for all applicable programs. Distribute annual reports and oversee the completion of IRS Forms 5500, PBGC filings and all benefit related audits.
  • With assistance from legal counsel, advise management and staff regarding benefits practices, policy interpretation, issue resolution, and compliance.
  • Develop and manage the preparation and distribution of all benefits-related employee communication materials.
  • Stay abreast of current trends/laws/regulations that could have a material impact on programs.
  • Ensure accuracy and effectiveness of employee benefits orientation sessions, dissemination of all benefit information materials, open enrollment and “Director and above” one-on-one sessions.
  • Assist the Company’s benefits consultant, or the VP Total Rewards in developing Company bargaining proposals for employee benefits. Assist in analyzing union benefit demands by gathering/preparing cost data for the Company, union proposals, and final settlements.
  • Continuously evaluate the effectiveness of our rewards programs to ensure they are aligned with our business and talent strategies and market trends; make recommendations for changes, as appropriate.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education / Experience / Background

  • Bachelor's degree with an emphasis in Marketing, Mathematics, Communication or Business; Master’s degree, MBA or other advanced degrees a plus
  • A minimum of 15 years of experience in employee benefits management.
  • Experience in managing a team of benefits professionals.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Must have a deep understanding of pension, 401(k) Plans, fully insured and self-insured Health and Welfare Benefit Plans and accompanying laws and regulations associated with these functional areas.
  • This position requires prior supervisory experience and excellent interpersonal and communications skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong work ethic with planning and execution skills for a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication (written and verbal), organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills, along with strong attention to detail.

Required Certification / Licenses / Training

  • Certified Compensation Professional (CCP), Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) and/or HR Certification via SHRM or HRCI designations preferred
