Material Handler

A typical day as a material handler would include:

Responsible for performing a variety of routine tasks in the movement of non-hazardous and hazardous materials.  Under direct supervision, tasks could include all types of manual labor including the handling, packing, loading/unloading, and processing of material.  Could also include loading/unloading trucks and various other related tasks. The right candidate must be willing to learn numerous tasks and be a great team player.  Some overtime and on-call on weekends are required.  Dependable and hard working with a great attitude is a must! Primary Duties / Responsibilities

  • Maintains a safe and compliant work environment at all times.  Works safely and wears appropriate PPE for task.
  • Complies with all environmental, health and safety policies and procedures. 
  • Loads and unloads various materials such as pallets, totes, drums, etc.
  • Constructs packaging/boxes/containers and prepares for shipment.  
  • Uses a variety of hand tools such as impact wrenches, drum carts, saws, torches, etc.
  • Moves material within the facility using appropriate equipment such as hand trucks, pallet trucks, forklifts, etc.
  • Dismantles/sorts materials for recycling/disposal.
  • Operates and performs routine maintenance/inspections on recycling equipment.
  • Prepares by-product materials for shipment, including the baling or containerization of material.
  • Completes documentation/paperwork for daily production logs and facility operation records. 
  • Performs general housekeeping duties and maintains a clean, organized and safe work area.
  • Safely moves a variety of vehicles containing hazardous waste materials to appointed designated areas within the facility based on daily operational needs.
  • Check condition of various loaded equipment moved on-site for load and equipment integrity.  Once equipment is offloaded will insure integrity by closing van doors, removing placards, replacing roll-off box tarps, securing tank hoses, etc.
  • Assists supervisor in overseeing compliance of all OSHA, EPA, DOT, and all other governmental regulations.
  • Assists supervisor in overseeing operation of all equipment including maintenance to ensure optimum utilization. 

Assists supervisor in providing leadership by scheduling, managing performance, and developing staff.

Job Requirements

Knowledge Skills and Ability
  • Knowledge of VNA standard operating procedures, policies, and regulations
  • Intermediate knowledge and understanding in the following areas: DOT, EPA, TSCA, and OSHA
  • Skilled in the use of electronic equipment including barcoding scanners
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to safely operate material handling equipment
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Ability to obtain a Class A or B Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with Hazardous (H) endorsement

Education/Experience:• High School diploma or General Educational Development (GED) required
• Prior work experience of 3 years electronics recycling/disposal experience.

• 24-Hour/40-Hour HAZWOPER training preferred, but not required
• Forklift license preferred
