Primary Duties/responsibilities:
- Obtains and records accurate water usage and other data from customer meters using a variety of means including manual visual readings and electronic digital devices in accordance with established routing patterns and timelines.
- Inspects meter installations for tampering, insuring that lids are secure, meter registers are readable, and meter box is accessible.
- Inputs data for reports (i.e. hazard codes, damage reports, location and meter condition information, etc.).
- Trims around meter boxes.
- Gives proper leak notification to customers and/or company.
- Performs Customer Service Person (Field) and Utility Person functions as directed by management, and late-shift Customer Service Person (Field) duties on a rotating schedule.
- Uses digital tools, (computer, laptop, tablet, smart phone, etc.) devices and software to communicate, and perform and record work.
- Performs all job responsibilities and duties in compliance with all safety, health, environmental, and security laws, rules, policies, programs and training.
Qualifications
Education/Experience/Background:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Satisfactory completion of high school courses in Mathematics, English grammar and composition or equivalent.
- One (1) year experience in essential field operations, field customer service, under-ground facility installation and/or repair, general construction, and/or water distribution system work preferred.
- Demonstrated outdoor work history preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to read meters with an error rate not to exceed 1% within six (6) months.
- Ability to walk for extended periods of time over uneven terrain in inclement weather (on average of 5-6 miles and up to 10 miles throughout typical walking route shift).
- Ability to read and interpret maps.
- Ability to carry/lift up to 31 pounds on an occasional basis.
- Ability to work with various hand tools and equipment.
- Excellent hand/eye/foot coordination necessary to open/close meter lids.
- Excellent communications skills, both oral and written.
- Excellent organization, interpersonal, and problem solving skills.
- Ability to function in the digital world, using computer, laptop, tablet, smartphone devices and software to communicate and perform and record work.
Required Certification/Licenses/Training:
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
Physical Requirements:
- Drives to and from work locations. Spends up to 6 hours driving (driving routes).
- Transfer to/from vehicle to perform work between 8 and 50 times.
- The Meter Reader typically walks up to 5-6 miles and sometimes up to 10 miles, (in all weather conditions and at times on even/uneven ground and slippery conditions).
- Physical demands of the Meter Reader are classified as “Heavy.” Physical demands classification reflect the frequency and duration of weight lifted, pulled, pushed, and miles walked, etc.
- Lifting/carrying up to 31 lbs. is required on an occasional basis.
- Frequent crouching, kneeling, stooping/bending, and twisting is performed with occasional lying down or crawling.
- Reaching is performed frequently below shoulder level and occasionally at shoulder level/above.
