Job Description

The Merritt Green Energy Plant is a 40MW biomass electric generating plant currently under construction in British Columbia, Canada. It is scheduled to start commercial operation in the 4th quarter of 2016. The plants will be operated and maintained by Veolia with a staff of approximately 24 FTE per plant under a 30 year guaranteed performance contract. The plant will also be supplied by Veolia with 200,000 oven dry tonnes of biomass fuel per year.
Shift Engineer
The Plant Engineer is primarily a machinery operator position in the fuel yard coupled with line-of progression relief into the power house that is subject to completing in-house progressive training to learn operations and maintenance skills. The Plant Engineer is expected possess their Fourth Class Power Engineering Certificate, and is expected to participate in a progression program that includes rotating in a shift work environment.  
The Plant Engineer is also expected to continue their training progression through all Operations roles within the plant, along with ongoing advancement of Power Engineering Certification.  This role will provide relief coverage for the Assistant Shift Engineer as required. 


  • Operation of the following heavy equipment - D9 Dozer, Front End Loader, Excavator, Fork Lift, and Skid Steer;
  • Performing plant clean-up and preventative maintenance activities;
  • Assist Operations and Maintenance crews;
  • Conduct inspections, analyze and diagnose equipment malfunctions and take corrective action, as required; initiate maintenance requests;
  • Actively participate in the plant Lock Out/Tag Out program to ensure tasks are completed safely;
  • Provide relief for the Assistant Shift Engineer;
  • Actively participate in preventative and corrective maintenance programs;
  • Interpret plans, drawings and specifications related to operation of plant equipment;
  • Maintain operating logs adhering to applicable regulations;
  • Inform incoming shift personnel and other persons concerned of matters requiring attention and the operating status of plant equipment;
  • Adhere to applicable safety and environmental standards, regulations and company policies;
  • Participate in continuous educational and professional development, both internal and external;
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area;
  • Direct, coach, train, orient and work effectively with other staff;
  • May have the opportunity to assist and work at the other plant for short assignments;
  • Other related duties, as assigned.

Job Requirements


  • The candidate will possess a valid BC Interprovincial Fourth Class or third class Power Engineer’s Certificate of Competency;
  • Material handling, heavy equipment, dozer, excavtor or loader experience;
  • Effective communication, problem solving, interpersonal skills and demonstrated supervisory skills are highly desired.


  • Solid computer skills: proficiency with spreadsheet, email, and word processing software required; Microsoft Office and Windows preferred;
  • A working knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management Software (MAXIMO) applications will be an asset.


  • Previous experience in an industrial setting would be an asset;
  • Experience with Material Handling;
  • Experience working with biomass;
  • Experience with commissioning;
  • Experience with Boilers.


  • Be able to work for prolonged periods in extremes of hot and cold temperatures and inclement weather conditions; Be able to tolerate dust and other airborne particles and work around other materials such as biomass, diesel and lube oils; 
  • Under certain conditions while working in the plant, may be required to wear a respirator; 
  • Required to wear safety equipment and FR clothing where appropriate;
  • Requires frequent stooping, bending, climbing, reaching, and carrying and moving heavy objects with assistance when required;
  • Must be able to work from ladders, scaffolds, and high-lifts, and in confined spaces.


  • Shift work will be required;
  • Must be available for overtime if required.
