Job Description

The Merritt Green Energy is a 40MW biomass electric generating plant currently in operation in British Columbia, Canada. The plant started commercial operation in the 1st quarter of 2018 and is currently in the later stages of commissioning, testing and tuning. The plant is operated and maintained by Veolia with a staff of approximately 24 FTE under a 30 year guaranteed performance contract. The plant will also be supplied by Veolia with 200,000 oven dry tons of biomass fuel per year.

The Plant Engineer is both a machinery operator in the fuel yard and a line-of progression plant operator in the power house who is subject to completing in-house progressive training to learn operations and maintenance skills in a First Class Power Plant. The Plant Engineer is required to possess their Third or Fourth Class Power Engineering Certificate, and is required to work a 24/7/365 shift work schedule.

The Plant Engineer is expected to continue their training progression through all Operations roles within the plant along with continued advancement of Power Engineering Certification. This role will provide relief coverage for the Assistant Shift Engineer as required.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Adhere to applicable safety and environmental standards, regulations and company policies
  • Perform plant clean-up and preventative maintenance activities
  • Operate the following heavy equipment – D7 & D9 Dozer, Front End Loader, Fork Lift, Skid Steer, AWP and Telehandler
  • Conduct plant rounds and equipment inspections
  • Operate Plant equipment and the Water Treatment Plant as directed by the Shift Engineer
  • Maintain operating logs adhering to applicable regulations
  • Assist Operations and Maintenance crews where required
  • Assist Truck Drivers with Hog Fuel Sampling and Truck Scaling activities
  • Conduct inspections, analyze and diagnose equipment malfunctions and take corrective action, as required; initiate maintenance requests
  • Actively participate in the plant Lock Out/Tag Out program to ensure tasks are completed safely.
  • Provide relief for the Assistant Shift Engineer
  • Actively participate in preventative and corrective maintenance programs
  • Interpret plans, drawings and specifications related to operation of plant equipment
  • Inform incoming shift personnel and other persons concerned of matters requiring attention and the operating status of plant equipment
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area
  • Direct, coach, train, orient and work effectively with other staff
  • May provide supervisory oversight to subordinate line-of-progression positions or Contractors
  • May have the opportunity to assist and work at the other plant for short assignments.
  • May be required to assist and work at the other plant (in Ft St James) for short assignments
  • Participate in professional development, both internal and external
  • Must continue professional education and certification
  • Other related duties, as assigned


Job Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • The candidate must possess a valid BC Interprovincial Fourth Class or Third Class Power Engineer’s Certificate of Competency
  • Material handling, heavy equipment, dozer, excavator or loader experience
  • Effective communication, problem solving, interpersonal skills and demonstrated supervisory skills are highly desired
  • Ability to pass a criminal record check


TECHNOLOGY SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:

  • Proficiency with spreadsheet, email, and word processing software required; Microsoft Office and Windows preferred
  • A working knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management Software (OWAM) applications will be an asset


PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Previous experience in an industrial setting would be an asset
  • Previous operational experience
  • Previous experience work with the Trades, maintenance or in construction
  • Material handling, heavy equipment, dozer, or loader experience
  • Experience with Material Handling
  • Experience working with biomass


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Be able to work for prolonged periods in extremes of hot and cold temperatures and inclement weather conditions
  • Be able to tolerate dust and other airborne particles and work around other materials such as biomass, diesel and lube oils
  • Under certain conditions while working in the plant, may be required to wear a respirator
  • Required to wear safety equipment and FR clothing where appropriate Requires frequent stooping, bending, climbing, reaching and carrying, use of hand tools (shovels, brooms, sledgehammers, picks) and moving heavy objects
  • Must be able to work from ladders, scaffolds, and high-lifts, and in confined spaces




HOURS OF WORK:

24/7/365 shift work is required.
Must be available for overtime if required by site and be willing to relocate to Merritt B.C.
